Trooper Called to Contentious Hartsville Town Meeting

That the Hartsville Town meetings are often heated is no secret, but a special meeting this week was even more dramatic than usual as a state trooper was called in.  The trouble began while the wife of former town board member Ron Amidon was speaking.  Resident Larry Newhart reportedly mumbled something inaudible during her speech, prompting Town Supervisor John Bowles to ask him to leave.  Newhart refused.  Bowles then left the room and made a phone call.  Newhart left a few moments later.  A trooper later arrived and spoke with Bowles.  Newhart, who says he was never called or visited by the state police, told WLEA radio that he wasn’t being confrontational and that he was civil in tone.  Supervisor Bowles claims the exact opposite, saying that Newhart was “very confrontational and very uncivil with his voice.”
