Statement by Senator Young on Copycat Threats of Violence at District Schools

Statement by Senator Young on Copycat Threats of Violence

Student Threats at Chautauqua Lake Central School, Ashville BOCES and Randolph Academy under investigation

“As our nation continues to mourn with the people of Parkland, Florida over the 17 innocent young people murdered in cold blood by their former classmate Nikolas Cruz, the copycat threats made by students at schools in my district are both alarming and despicable. While we don’t yet know if their motivations were malicious or attention-getting, any type of threat understandably strikes terror in the hearts of other students, their parents and school staff. These actions will not be tolerated and the consequences for threats of any nature will be rightfully harsh.

“I am grateful for the swift and decisive response of school officials and the State Police in apprehending these students and assuring the safety of all those in these schools. I am also grateful to the Governor for his attention to these incidents and for taking a strong stance on safety by directing an increased State Police presence at schools statewide. We must remain vigilant to protect New York’s students.”
