Police conduct hunting season enforcement in Wyoming County, Portageville

On November 24, 2024, the Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office worked together with the New York State Police and New York State Environmental Conservation Police by conducting a joint road check in the Hamlet of Portageville. The focus of the detail was to check for compliance with Environmental Conservation Laws during the ongoing regular deer hunting season, and to check for compliance with Vehicle and Traffic Laws.

Throughout the detail, three [3] individuals were charged with Prohibited Possession of a Loaded Firearm in a Vehicle, each unclassified misdemeanors in New York State, and in violation of 11- 0931 [02] of the Environmental Conservation Law. Twelve [12] Vehicle and Traffic Law citations were issued during the detail, and two criminal arrests were made by Wyoming County Sheriff’s Deputies as follows:

-Erick Baldwin, age 23 of Amherst, NY, a convicted felon, was arrested after he was found to be in prohibited possession of two rifles. Baldwin, who was also currently subject of a felony warrant out of Niagara Falls, NY, provided a false identity to law enforcement during their investigation. Baldwin was charged with two [2] counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree, and one [1] count each of Criminal Impersonation in the Second Degree, and False Personation. Baldwin was issued an appearance ticket, as none of his charges qualified for bail. Baldwin was released and was scheduled to answer the charges in Genesee Falls Town Court on December 11, 2024 at 5 p.m.

-Chance W. Karst, age 28 of Mount Morris, NY, was arrested after being found to be operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license. Karst was issued an appearance ticket for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Third Degree, and he was scheduled to answer the charge in Genesee Falls Town Court on December 11, 2024 at 5 p.m.
