Allegany County defies the odds, sales tax $$ up in 2020

An Allegany County legislator said, "amazing." That was his response when the county treasurer stated in a Committee of the Whole meeting this afternoon that sales tax collections in 2020 were up $937,000 from 2019. Up...during the pandemic when so much was closed! Treasurer Terri Ross told lawmakers that energy sales tax collections were up $100,000 from '19. She noted the largest increase came from online sales. Ross also noted that the first collections for 2021 showed an increase of $50,000 from the same time a year ago. She told legislators, however, it's "obviously very early in the year."
