PENN YAN—The New York State AFL-CIO has endorsed Democrat Tracy Mitrano in her bid to represent New York’s 23rd district in Congress. Mitrano is running to unseat Republican incumbent Tom Reed.
The New York AFL-CIO, which represents 2.5 million working people across the state, released its candidate endorsements late last week.
“Now more than ever, as COVID-19 leaves a trail of destruction through the health and economic security of working people, we need elected officials who will stand up and fight for workers both now and in the months and years ahead,” said state federation president Mario Cilento. “We endorse these candidates with great confidence that they understand the priorities of union members and will take on the issues important to all workers while helping to build-up the middle class.”
“I am honored to be included in the New York State AFL-CIO ‘Class of 2020,’” said Mitrano, who also ran against Reed in 2018. “Traveling around the district for the past three years, seeing so many workers struggle to make ends meet and hearing their concerns have made me keenly aware of the need to reinstate a progressive tax system and champion workers ahead of the 1percent.”
