New Belmont Fire District halted; petitions force public vote

From the Belmont Fire Department:
Fire District Update:
Yesterday on August 27th 2020 there was a petition filed with the Town of Amity, Town Clerk.
What is being petitioned?
On August 10, 2020, the Town Board of the Town of Amity approved and adopted a Resolution authorizing the establishment of the Belmont Fire District; and that on August 3, 2020, the Village  Board of Trustees of the Village of Belmont approved and adopted a Resolution authorizing the establishment of the Belmont Fire District. This is in protest against the adoption of such Resolutions.
What happens now?
There will be a mandatory referendum to establish such joint fire district, submitted to the qualified property owners of the town and/or village affected, that being the Town of Amity, for their approval or disapproval pursuant to Articles Seven and Twelve-A of the New York State Town Law. A special town election will need to be held not less than ninety nor more than one hundred five days after the filing of such petition.
How does this a effect our fire protection?
The Fire Department will remain under the auspices of the Village of Belmont through at least December 31st 2021. This will mean another year of our fire protection being underfunded. It means another year without needed equipment, another year without reserve funds for fire apparatus replacement, equipment replacement or building replacement. This is a change that needed to happen sooner rather than later.
We appreciate all the support we have had through this process and we hope to see you at the polls in late November/early December.
Thank You,
Dedicated Volunteers of Belmont Fire Company INC.
