NY-based Casino Workers to Hold Rally to Urge Cuomo to Provide Guidance

NY-based Casino Workers to Hold Rally to Urge Cuomo to Provide Guidance
NYS casino workers and community members will voice their concerns with simultaneous rallies on August 27 at 12:00pm at all five NYS casinos

Nichols, NY – While the doors to New York-based casinos remain closed to the public, regions of New York State are concerned for the future of their communities and the adverse economic effects caused by the delay in reopening of the casinos. There is no timetable for when casinos will reopen and the NYS regions will continue to suffer as well as the financial wellness of the counties and municipalities that benefit from the casino’s shared tax revenue.

According to the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, an employee that has been temporarily laid off (or furloughed), will automatically be terminated at the six-month mark. Approximately 5,200 casino employees in New York have been out of work since Cuomo directed casinos to close in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will be automatically terminated by 10/1. Casinos and locally elected officials are receiving no guidelines as to a reopening plan from the state while sovereign NYS casinos are open as well as out of state casinos, with no COVID outbreaks or issues. These jobs are essential to the local NYS communities and the casino employees need to get back to work.

WHAT: A rally to urge Governor Andrew Cuomo to provide additional guidance on when he will reopen the NYS casinos

WHEN: Thursday, August 27, 2020 at 12:00 p.m.

WHERE: All 5 NYS Casinos

WHO: Local community leaders are encouraged to attend.

The rallies will abide by all health guidelines — face coverings will be required and social distancing encouraged. Hand sanitizer will be available for attendees.
