WHEC - New York ranks worst in country for home fire deaths

(WHEC) — The Firemen's Association of the State New York (FASNY) urged people to check their smoke detectors in a message to the state on Thursday.
According to the Federal U.S. Fire Administration, New York leads the country with 87 civilian fire deaths so far in 2019. FASNY says three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without a working smoke alarm.
FASNY gave these tips on maintaining a proper smoke alarm system:
  • Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home, in each bedroom, and near all sleeping areas.
  • Test smoke alarms monthly to make sure they're working.
  • Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old.
  • Interconnect your smoke alarms so that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all do
Fire prevention week starts on Sunday.
