Last year, the Wellsville Daily Reporter merged with the Hornell Evening Tribune to create "The Spectator." Today, employee's in Wellsville learned that they will be unemployed at the end of the month. The former Wellsville Daily Reporter employees learned this morning that they will be jobless after March 29th. The Main Street operation in the village of Wellsville will close. One veteran reporter called the announced "sad." The reporter added that it "breaks my heart."
The Spectator, aka former Wellsville Daily Reporter, is Allegany County's only daily newspaper. Curt Crandall leads the county legislature. He called it a sad day and said the county will need to review its 'official newspaper.'
Shad Alsworth is the Wellsville Town Supervisor...He called the situation "unfortunate, and sad." He added it "breaks my heart."
The staff at the Main Street operation, including veteran reporter Kathryn Ross who has been at the newspaper since 1984, will be gone effective March 29th.
The "daily newspaper" will continue to be published and available at gas stations...some senior staff has remained. Wellsville Supervisor Shad Alwswoth said " we have to accept the changes." He added that "this town is in pretty good shape." He said the newspaper announcement "breaks his heart...adding I like to hold a paper."
