At 6:04 p.m. Friday night the Bath Volunteer Fire Department
was dispatched for a reported structure fire at 10 Wood Street in the village
of Bath. Fire Department Safety Officer John Walczak was first on scene and
confirmed a working structure fire and requested mutual aid from the Bath VA
Fire department and for Bath Village utilities to the scene. Upon arrival of
Assistant Chief Sean Walruth a full 2nd alarm was requested which dispatched
Pultney FD for a RIT Team as well as manpower from Hammondsport and Kanona to
the scene and Savona to standby at the Bath station. Also Bath Volunteer
Ambulance to the scene for standby. The Bath Village Police as well as Steuben
County Sheriff’s department were also on scene. The structure was a mobile home
with an attached garage and was fully involved with heavy black smoke which
could be seen for miles.
The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes
but units remained on scene to complete the extinguishment and to assist the
Steuben County Fire Investigation Team. There was no one home at the time the
fire broke out. The fire was seen by a person who was driving by and called it
in. The home at 10 Wood Street had the siding melt from the intense heat of the
fire. There were no injuries on scene and The American Red Cross was called for
the family of three that lost everything in the home. The investigation found
that the fire started in an outlet in the rear of the mobile home. All Bath
units returned to service at 9:07 p.m.
