First Southern Tier Film Festival to be Held in Fillmore

HOUGHTON, NY - Local students and teachers will showcase their film writing skills at the inaugural Southern Tier Film Festival, slated for June 14 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. at Fillmore Central School. This event is free and open to the public.
The Southern Tier Film Festival emerged from the work that local English teachers are doing with Dr. Sunshine Sullivan, associate professor and chair of education at Houghton College, and Dr. David Bruce, associate professor of learning & instruction at University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education. These teachers spent an entire week of last summer immersed in writing with video, and immediately began employing these new digital strategies in their classrooms.
“Never before have I noticed this much passion, creativity, and time spent on an English project,” remarked Lacey Gardner, English teacher at Whitesville Central School. “Nothing is more powerful than combining words, images, and music.”
This festival will feature student productions from around the region, including from Allegany-Limestone Central School, Cuba-Rushford High School, Fillmore Central School, Olean High School, and Whitesville Central School. One of these up-and-coming filmmakers will take home the trophy, with audience members participating in the final voting. For more information on the event, visit the event’s Facebook page.
