Obituary: Ralph Ernest Thompson, 88, Amity


AMITY – Ralph Ernest Thompson, 88, passed away on Wednesday (May 13, 2020) at home with his family gathered by his side.
Mr. Thompson was born on July 13, 1931 to Robert Northway and Doris (Morse) Thompson in Portage. He was a 1949 graduate of Nunda Central School. In 1951 he graduated from Alfred State with his associate’s degree in electrical engineering. He served his country from 1955-1956 in the United States Army, completing his service as a Tech Sergeant. On April 28, 1962 he married the love of his life, Patricia Cronk who preceded him in death on August 20, 1995.
Ralph worked as an electrical engineer for G.E. in Syracuse, retiring after 44 years in 1995.
Ralph is survived by his children, Margo Scofield of Harpursville, Linda McHugh of Syracuse, Susan (James) Kusche of Weedsport, Robert (Belinda) Thompson of Scio, and James Thompson of Tully; his brother, Rolland (Patricia) Thompson of Hornell; nine grandchildren, Caitlin McHugh, Maura McHugh, Micaela Patchin, Madison Patchin, Kristen Thompson, Garrett Thompson, Victoria Thompson, Nora Thompson and Lawson Ector, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Along with his wife of 33 years, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Christopher McHugh.
Ralph owned and operated a small farm for most of his life. His hobbies included coin collecting and completing crossword puzzles and he was known for his uncanny ability to fix things. His favorite travel spot was Florida where he chose to pass the winters for 20 years. Ralph was a family man and was most content in their company.
A graveside service for immediate family, and a memorial service for friends and extended family, will be held on a future date.
