Schmelzer to resign as Belmont Mayor

After leading the Village of Belmont for nearly two decades, Mayor Terry Schmelzer plans to resign on June 1st. The  long-time Mayor cited "personal reasons." He has served as mayor since 2001, but in other capacities for thirty-five years. According to the village website, Ray DeTine is the current deputy Mayor. Village Clerk Richard Hoshal had nothing for praise this morning for Schmelzer. "He's been a big part of this community, " Hoshal said.
The village board will meet June 1st at 7 p.m. at which time they are expected to appoint DeTine as interim mayor for a year. He'll service until a special election is called.
