Firefighters from more than a half dozen departments battled
a smoky blaze on Emerson Road in the Town of Wirt Monday. The call to 911 came in
shortly after midnight. Crews and equipment responded from Richburg fire and
ambulance, Bolivar fire, Allentown, Friendship, Clarksville, Cuba,
Shinglehouse, the county fire coordinator and a Cattaraugus County FAST team.
The first fire chief on scene reported heavy smoke conditions. 45 minutes into
the firefighting effort, the on-scene command said they still needed more masked
men. There were no immediate reports of injuries. The cause is under
investigation.
UPDATE: The fire was declared under control at 1:42 a.m. and "mop up" operations were beginning.
