In the United States and around the world, freedom of speech
and the press are among the most important foundations for a free society. Free speech and free press are prominent
topics in public discourse and litigation.
It is impossible to imagine a free society without these individual
liberties, yet historical and current debates surrounding them continually
challenge us to consider their boundaries and resilience. Changes in technology have reshaped how free
speech and free press work in the everyday world.
-Interested
students should submit a 500 – 700 word essay addressing the following:
ESSAY QUESTION: Discuss how free speech and freedom of the
press are foundational aspects of American Society. Cite examples of how the issues arise in the
present day. What limitations, if any,
should the government be allowed to place on speech and the press, and
why? What protections, if any, should be
in place for these freedoms?
-Cash prizes
will be awarded in the amount of $300 for the first prize and $200 for second
prize. Judging will be done by the
members of the Allegany County Bar Association and essays will be judged
anonymously.
-Essays should
be submitted with an attached cover sheet containing the student’s name,
address, phone number, school and school sponsor or teacher. No name or identifying information should be
on the essay itself because the judging will be done anonymously. All essays will be assigned a number before
