Celebrate the New Year outdoors with friends and family!

What better way to kick off the New Year than by getting a jump start torching off those holiday calories in the great outdoors. Join one of the dozens of sponsored hikes held each New Year's Day on public lands across the Empire State. Staff from DEC and State Parks, along with volunteers at many sites, lead these family-friendly walks and hikes, which range from one to five miles depending on the location and conditions. Check out the great hikes available.

Meet at the Hawks Road south parking area (42.001079°N, 77.878507°W, 3 miles east of the Shongo General Store) and walk to the Pennsylvania border and back (approximately 1 mile); for those who would like a longer hike, we can continue north on the trail to State Route 19 and back (approximately 3.7 miles total).
Level of Difficulty: easy, flat trail. Leashed dogs allowed, be prepared for weather with appropriate footwear and layered clothing, also bring water and a snack if desired. Pre-registration preferred but not required. Registration preferred, please call, text or email the number of attendees with "Registration " on the subject line. There are no bathroom facilities. Hike may be cancelled in the event of poor weather conditions.
