At the Monday, December 10, 2018 Board of Legislators meeting, Curtis W. Crandall, Chairman of the Allegany County Board of Legislators, and Anita Mattison, Coordinator of Services for the Office for the Aging, recognized Debra Jaeckle, John Mertsock, Eileen and Tex Kane, Tracy Carlson, and Karen and Cameron Chamberlain for their hard work in putting on a fundraiser to help the Allegany County Office for the Aging Volunteer Transportation Program.  Requests for rides increased significantly in 2018 straining our budget to the point where there was a possibility of not being able to offer rides for the month of December.  On October 25, 2018, these dedicated volunteers held a Spaghetti Dinner and Chinese Auction at the Wellsville VFW and raised $2,054.18, which kept the program going through December.
The Volunteer Transportation program offers rides for people 60 years and older to medical appointments, grocery shopping, pharmacies, banks, and support groups.  Volunteers donate their time and the OFA pays them mileage.  The ACOFA currently has 24 volunteer drivers with over 138 combined years of volunteering.  So far in 2018, 146 seniors received 586 rides for a total of 34,564 miles.  If you are interested in volunteering for this or our many other programs, please call Karen Chamberlain at 585-268-9390.
