ALFRED, NY – John Zlomek, a retired trooper with the New York State Police, has been appointed chief of the Office of Public Safety at Alfred University. His appointment is effective Jan. 14.
A resident of Belmont, Zlomek served 23 years with the New York State Police before his retirement in 2011. He also served seven years as a New York State-certified school resource officer in the Genesee Valley School District and has assisted several school districts in Allegany County with development of emergency management plans.
“I am extremely pleased to have someone with John’s extensive skills, knowledge and experience in law enforcement and community policing joining Alfred University,” said Norm Pollard, dean of students at Alfred University. “I am confident that John will be able to continue our efforts to provide high quality and student focused security services for our campus. I believe folks will appreciate his calm, professional and approachable demeanor.”
At Alfred, Zlomek will oversee a public safety office consisting of three full-time and four part-time officers certified by New York State, as well as 10 student staff workers and an administrative assistant.
The staff of the Office of Public Safety patrols approximately 425 acres of Alfred University owned property. This property includes the immediate campus located in the Village of Alfred, and the Bromley-Daggett Equestrian Center at Maris Cuneo Equine Park, Jericho Hill Fields, and Foster Lake, located in the Town of Alfred. The Office of Public Safety serves more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students and approximately 600 employees.
Zlomek also served as a D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer from 1992-2010 and was a member of the Allegany County Highway Safety Board from 1995-2011.
