ALFRED, NY – Bryan J. Hill, county executive for Fairfax County, VA, and a 1990 Alfred University graduate, will deliver the keynote address at the University’s Opening Convocation ceremonies Friday, Aug. 24, in the Galanis Family Arena. Hill was appointed in January to the position of county executive in Fairfax County where he manages the daily operations of an organization with over 12,000 employees. With 1.3 million residents, Fairfax is by far the most populous county in Virginia. As the chief administrative officer, he oversaw the creation and approval of the Fairfax County’s FY 2019 $4.29 billion general fund budget and is leading the development of the county’s strategic plan.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Alfred University in 1990 and went on to earn a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Southern California in 1995. Hill’s wife, Kenita, is a 1989 Alfred University graduate (B.S., business administration).
Hill has enjoyed a successful career in public administration, serving as deputy county administrator in Beaufort County, SC, from 2008-14 and as chief administrative officer and clerk to the board for James City County, VA, from 2014 until his appointment as county executive for Fairfax County.
At James City County, Hill was responsible for oversight of staff, major infrastructure projects, economic development, transportation initiatives and the development and implementation of the county’s first strategic plan. He led the realignment of the county’s debt portfolio, which resulted in AAA ratings from each of the three major bond rating agencies.
Hill has experience as an administrator in higher education as well. Prior to being appointed deputy county administrator in Beaufort County, SC, he served as vice chancellor for finance and operations at the University of South Carolina’s Beaufort/Bluffton Campus; director of finance for the University of Maryland’s Office of Information and Technology; and director of administration for the University Of Maryland’s Department Of Aerospace Engineering.
Opening Convocation will mark the beginning of Alfred University’s 183rd year. On Thursday, an estimated 519 new students (449 first-year and 70 transfers) are expected to arrive on campus. Classes for the 2018-19 academic year begin on Monday, Aug. 27.
