New York State Police joined the Ithaca City Police and several other agencies on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 honoring Lieutenant Colin Hayward Toland. Colin was the youngest member with the Ithaca City Police Department. He became an honorary police officer in 2016 when (now retired) Chief John Barber learned the boy had been battling brain cancer since the age of 2. Colin passed away at the age of 10 on March 17, 2018 while at St. Jude Hospital. His body was transported by airplane to Hancock Airport in Syracuse where he was met by full honor guard, dozens of police officers and emergency responders. A procession traveled with Colin and his family from Syracuse to a funeral home in Tompkins County.
