HOUGHTON, NY - Houghton College has been included in the 2018 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, used by millions of students, parents, and guidance counselors for more than 30 years.
The compilation of more than 300 colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom covers a broad spectrum of collegiate aspects – including academics, campus setting, extracurricular activities, financial aid, food, housing, social life, and more – in order to give readers a comprehensive view of included institutions.
A current Houghton student quoted in the listing remarked that “There are few schools that will work so closely with their students, through setting academic goals, [helping them pursue] internships, listening to their passions, and equipping them to work where their deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet."
This year’s guide also includes a listing of schools where ACT and SAT scores are optional, allowing students the flexibility to choose how best to represent their ability to succeed in a collegiate setting. Houghton recently announced expansions to its admission testing requirements, including student choice in submitting such standardized test scores for consideration. Fairtest.org notes that half of the top 100 liberal arts colleges in the nation have test optional admission policies.
“Houghton’s inclusion in Fiske’s 2018 Guide is further confirmation of what students and alumni have always known – that Houghton is among the select institutions where academic quality meets accessibility and affordability,” remarks Ryan Spear, director of admission. “We are pleased to receive this commendation as Houghton strives to produce scholar servants prepared to make an impact in the world.”
