The Allegany Senior Foundation is sponsoring a day of science exploration at the Allegany County Dresser Rand Challenger Learning Center in Allegany, New York. Regardless of your grandchild’s age this opportunity provides you and your grandchild with a day filled with science exploration that will stimulate their imagination and tickle their fantasies.
Session 1: Mission to Comet Haley is designed for young people ages ten (Grade 5) and older. The 90-minute mission engages the participants in a real life simulation of a mission to the Comet Haley. Participants will spend forty five minutes in Mission Control managing the mission and another 45 minutes in the Space Station building a probe and navigating to Comet Halley. Participants will take on the jobs of the astronauts such as communications, navigation, data collection, and sickbay.
Session 2: S.P.A.C.E. Academy is an interactive discovery lab designed for children ages 5 (Kindergarten) – 10. Aspiring scientists, engineers, and mathematicians are engaged in a variety of hands on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) experiments involving such topics as sorting matter, separating mixtures, mystery star missions, Lego rovers, bugs, heart health, and building a mission probe. Participants will perform experiments, record data, and interpret the results to solve a variety of problems across 15 hands on stations in which grandparent and grandchild can engage together.
Jim Keough, Dresser Rand Commander, will lead the mission.
The mission will be held on Tuesday, July 18, and is open to all Allegany County grandparents and their grandchildren. The cost of the mission is $5.00 per person. Additional grandparents/grandchildren can join the team for an additional $5.00 each.
The mission teams will leave at 9:00 a.m. from the Office for the Aging Site at the Crossroads Building on Route 19 in Belvidere, New York. Astronauts will be provided transportation via bus and should arrive at the Center around 10:00. Lunch will be served at the end of the mission. The astronauts will be returned to the Belvidere Site at approximately 1:30 p.m.
You can register by calling the Office for the Aging at 585 268 9390. Seating is limited to the first 25 pairs to register. If you don’t have a grandchild that fits the age criteria, feel free to bring a surrogate.
