BATH -- Effective April 22, Steuben County will restrict the use of tobacco products in specified areas in all county-managed parks. The restriction prohibits the use of tobacco items within 15 feet of buildings and playgrounds, and is the result of a joint effort between the Southern Tier Tobacco Coalition, and the county Public Health and Public Works departments. County Public Works Commissioner Vince Spagnoletti said the policy is to similar rules at other counties’ parks. Locally, the major smoking issue at the Steuben parks is littering with chewing tobacco and cigarette butts, he said. The policy will be effective in the following parks: Birdseye Hollow Park, Bradford; Harley Mayo Park at Boyd’s Corners Park, Cameron; Hornby Park, Hornby and Kanakadea Park, Hornellsville. Offenders will be warned, and if they are not compliant, their ability to come to the park may be revoked, county officials said.
