Scholastic Challenge 2017 was held at Portville Central School on Saturday, February 4.  This year, a total of 36 teams – representing 14 school districts -- competed in the Junior and Senior Divisions.  The Finals were held on the stage in the Auditorium.  In the Junior Finals, Scio Central School placed second, while Cuba-Rushford took top honors.  In the Senior Finals, Fillmore C.S. placed first and Ellicottville C.S was second.  Both winning teams were undefeated in the day’s competition.  First and second place teams in each division received plaques to recognize their achievements.  The four teams are also invited to attend the 35th Annual National Academic Championships in Washington, D.C. on June 2-4.

Scholastic Challenge is a fast-paced contest which tests knowledge of academic trivia and current events.  Teams of four students from grades 6-12 measured their ability to recall details from a wide variety of topics.  This translated to about 200 students and coaches, who participated in the double-elimination contest.  Throughout the day, thousands of questions were read aloud to these ambitious teams.  Spectators are also encouraged to come out and watch the competition, which is always an impressive display of intelligence with camaraderie, graciousness and good sportsmanship. The following school districts were also represented in the competition: Franklinville, Friendship, Genesee Valley, Hinsdale, Pioneer, Portville, Randolph, Wellsville, West Valley, and Whitesville.  The annual regional competition is sponsored by Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES Instructional Support Services Student Programs.
