JCC: Non-Credit Plumbing Program Offered In Olean

Jamestown Community College’s Cattaraugus County Campus in Olean is launching a non-credit modern residential plumbing program this fall.
The 150-hour program, conducted by Nick Shembeda of Shembeda Plumbing, will introduce students to the most current plumbing technologies, machinery and equipment, tools, and devices through classroom sessions and hands-on training.
The program is divided into two modules, offered from October 16 to December 14 and from January 8 to March 7. Classes meet from 5:30-8:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays in JCC’s Manufacturing Technology Institute. Students must successfully complete the first module to enroll in the second.
The course fee of $1,250 per module covers the cost of workbooks, tools, and materials. The registration deadline is October 6. To register, call JCC, 716-376-7506.
“JCC’s program allows students who successfully complete the program to become competent plumbing professionals in the design, installation, and maintenance of residential plumbing systems,” says John Sayegh, vice president of the Cattaraugus County Campus and Center for Continuing Education.
“One of the hallmarks of the program is the hands-on training that will be provided through plumbing companies operating in the southern tier of western New York,” Sayegh adds.
Tools, instruments, piping materials, valves, and residential water supply systems, as well as soldering, brazing, and welding techniques, are explored in the first module.
The second module focuses on hydraulics and pneumatics, plumbing system design and installation, septic systems and swimming pools, and HVAC system installation.
Print reading, sketching, safety, and mathematical concepts are explored in both modules.
“Becoming a plumber will increase your chances of either working for a plumbing company or starting your own business,” notes Sayegh. “Plumbing services will always be in demand, and plumbers are not at risk of losing their jobs to machines. Plumbing is a fulfilling career that combines knowledge and innovation with the abilities to create and build with your hands.”
