The City of Hornell, in collaboration with consulting agency LaBella Associates and contractor C.P. Ward Inc., have been recognized with the 2024 Transportation Project of the Year Award by the Western New York branch of the American Public Works Association (APWA) for the Streetscapes, Alleyway, Wayfinding, and Public Art project.

This marks the second major municipal initiative funded through Hornell’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) to receive recognition from the APWA. Last year, the Union Square Park project was honored with the Project of the Year Award.

The $2.97 million Streetscapes, Alleyway, Wayfinding, and Public Art project improved key downtown corridors through sidewalk replacements, upgraded benches, tree replacements, enhanced accessibility, and new electrical components. These upgrades modernized the area while maintaining Hornell’s historic character.

“The APWA award is a wonderful recognition of the successful collaboration between the City, LaBella, and C.P. Ward,” stated Mayor John Buckley. “This project has significantly improved downtown Hornell, and we appreciate the dedication of everyone involved.”

The award-winning project spans Main Street from Center Street to Seneca Street, as well as Broadway and Pave Alley. In addition to the sidewalk improvements, the project also features wayfinding signage, which helps guide visitors to downtown destinations, along with the integration of public art to enhance the visual appeal of the area.

“This recognition highlights the impact of these infrastructure improvements on our community,” said Mayor Buckley. “We are proud of the work accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to make these enhancements through the DRI.”
