Moreover, Uniper can be used to communicate with family, friends, healthcare providers, and other essential services, providing a comprehensive platform for interaction.

Kalkbrenner underscores that Uniper Cares is tailored for older adults unfamiliar with technology. The device can be easily connected to a television or downloaded onto a computer or tablet. A user-friendly remote control is included for effortless navigation. In cases where individuals lack a smart TV or compatible device, Ardent Solutions offers equipment loans, internet access, and financial support for Uniper Cares subscriptions.

Important news for weather nerds (like me)

For more than two decades, the National Weather Service (NWS) delivered river observations and forecast products and services via the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS). This legacy system needed to be modernized to support newer innovation with technology and provide a more mobile-friendly user experience. On May 28, 2024 the NWS replaced AHPS with a new website, the National Water Prediction Service (NWPS). This new site can be viewed here

NWPS will be accessible at https://water.noaa.gov. The former AHPS link (water.weather.gov) will redirect to this new page for a limited time.  Again, please update any of your bookmarks.

The Senator is pictured here at the ceremony in Albany with Frank and his family (left to right): Christian (son), Senator Borrello, Frank, Julian (son), Isabella (daughter) and Crystal (wife

ALBANY – Francisco “Frank” Morales, a decorated veteran of United States Army and director of the Military Aligned Student Program at St. Bonaventure University, was inducted into the New York State Senate’s Veterans’ Hall of Fame today at a ceremony in Albany.

Master Sgt. Francisco Morales (Ret.) was nominated by Senator George Borrello in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the nation and fellow veterans. The annual recognition established in 2005 is bestowed upon a veteran from each Senate District in the state who has not only served valiantly in the military but has also made outstanding contributions on behalf of their community as a civilian.

“Frank Morales enlisted in the U.S. Army as an infantryman and served 20 years with tremendous distinction, ultimately attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Among his many awards is the Silver Star Medal, which was bestowed for his heroic actions on August 26, 2006, when Morales's unit was ambushed by over 60 Taliban. Morales was able to lead his men through the battle and save four wounded soldiers,” said Senator Borrello.

“The motto of the U.S. Army is ‘This We’ll Defend.’ It’s a vow that Frank Morales embraced as an active member of the military and as a civilian, in his role as Director of the St. Bonaventure Office of Veteran Service, where he mentors his fellow veterans and helps them prepare for a successful transition back into civilian life. It was my honor to be able to recognize him and have his story memorialized in the state’s history,” Senator Borrello said.

Senator Borrello noted that Mr. Morales’s Army tenure also included deployments in the Balkans, Africa, and twice to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Morales's final U.S. Army assignment was to St. Bonaventure as a senior Military Science instructor in the university’s Army ROTC program.

In addition to receiving the Silver Star Medal for his valor, he also received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in combat. After 20 years of service, he received numerous awards for achievement and earned the Combat and Expert Infantry Badges, the Parachutist Badge, the Pathfinder Badge, and the Drill Sergeant Badge.

After concluding his Army tenure, Mr. Morales attended graduate school, earning a Master of Mental Health Counseling, and working in counseling for several years before becoming the Director of the St. Bonaventure Office of Veteran Services.

“Frank is an incredible leader, and we are fortunate to have him leading our Military Aligned Program that supports Veterans and their families. He is an advocate for all Veterans and a valuable resource throughout the southern tier,” said Bernard Valento, Vice President for Enrollment, St. Bonaventure University.

He has also created a legacy at St. Bonaventure, with two of his sons graduating from the university and being inducted into the university’s ROTC Hall of Fame.

Currently, Frank spends his time helping veterans in all aspects of life. He is also a mentor for community veteran programs in western NY and is sought after for his expertise. He currently lives in Portville, New York, with his wife Crystal and his children Christian, Julian, and Isabella.

Senator Borrello will honor Mr. Morales at a special ceremony at St. Bonaventure University at a date which will be announced.

Joining Senator Borrello and honoree Frank Morales are Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Bernard Valento, Vice President for Enrollment, St. Bonaventure University.

Area Health Departments Collaborate through the Pivital Public Health Partnership to Launch a Multi-County Suicide Prevention Campaign

In response to alarming trends indicating a rise in suicides across the region, the local Public Health Departments of the Pivital Public Health Partnership (Chemung, Livingston, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties) partnered to launch a suicide prevention campaign. This initiative, modeled after the successful #BeThe1To campaign, targets at-risk populations in our region including first responders, older adults, men, and veterans.

Michele Foster, Executive Director of Pivital Public Health Partnership, expressed her optimism for the campaign, stating: "We are proud to launch this collaborative effort aimed at addressing the urgent issue of suicide prevention within our communities. By leveraging the power of partnerships and drawing upon the insights of local experts, we believe we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those most at risk."

Recent data has revealed a concerning increase in suicide rates within our communities, underscoring the urgent need for proactive measures to address mental health challenges. Drawing on insights from local suicide prevention coalitions and mental health officials, the collaborative effort seeks to provide targeted support and resources to those at higher risk for suicide.

One of the central features of the campaign is the integration of the newly established 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, offering immediate access to trained professionals for those in need of urgent assistance. This three-digit number, designated for mental health emergencies, ensures swift and effective response to individuals experiencing crises.

The suicide prevention campaign will encompass a range of targeted outreach efforts, educational initiatives, and community engagement events designed to reach and empower its intended audience. By fostering a culture of compassion, understanding, and resilience, the campaign aims to reduce stigma, increase awareness, and ultimately save lives.

Foster emphasized the importance of community involvement in driving positive change, adding, "Through collective action and a shared commitment to mental health advocacy, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for individuals facing mental health challenges."

The suicide prevention campaign will utilize targeted outreach efforts, educational initiatives, and community engagement events to reach its intended audience. By harnessing the strength of community partnerships and the proven success of the #BeThe1To campaign model, the Public Health Departments of the Pivital Public Health Partnership aim to empower individuals to reach out a helping hand if they suspect someone they know is struggling. The campaign invites community members to get involved by participating in awareness events, sharing resources, and engaging in open conversations about mental health. Community involvement is crucial in shaping a future where mental wellness is prioritized and stigma is eliminated.

Together, we can save lives and foster hope.
