Allegany County Press Release - Opposition to Executive Order

Allegany County Legislature Opposes Governor Hochul’s Executive Order

The Allegany County Board of Legislators opposes Governor Hochul’s Executive Order Number 47.3, which suspends municipal home rule authority allowing local governments to hire terminated corrections employees, viewing the action as punitive, unfair, and counter to the State’s purported goals of making New York a viable place to “live, work, and raise a family.”

In a letter to the Governor, the Board expressed its opposition to the executive order stating, “We oppose any attempt by the State or Federal Government to limit or curtail home rule, which ensures that the people’s choices in local representation can act in the best interests of their constituents. Executive Order 47.3 “…severely limits the Board’s ability to address what has been recognized as a critical need in New York State: the recruitment and retention of qualified and committed employees to public service.”

The Board also expressed its support for Allegany County Sheriff Scott Cicirello’s opposition to the HALT Act and urged the Governor to publicly support any legislation introduced that would repeal its unsafe and ineffective provisions.
