Belmont, NY – When the Allegany County Democratic Committee hosts its monthly “Coffee with Democrats” from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12th in Wellsville, they will be collecting non-perishable food and personal care items to be donated to The PLATE Food Pantry on the campus of Alfred State College. This is one small way county Democrats “serve our community.”
The Plate Food Pantry is a campus-based
student focused outreach launched in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19
pandemic. It is a joint initiative of Student Senate and the Center for Civic
Engagement seeking to address the challenge of food insecurity. The pantry
supplies non-perishable food and hygiene items to students in need. The PLATE
and an associated thrift store are open six days a week in the Community Needs
Hub on the ground floor of Peet Hall.
According to Cyan Corwin, Director of Global Engagement and Civic Wellbeing,
“Hygiene items are always valued (pads, tampons, contact solution, shampoo,
conditioner, deodorant, laundry detergent (pods or eco detergent sheets because
we parcel them out for single use with zip-lock bags). While we have commuter
students, we have higher requests for single serve shelf stable, things that
can be easily cooked in microwaves, and cans that have pull-top lids rather
than need for can-openers. We also get requests for water and water enhancers
because Alfred water is not the tastiest.”
The “Coffee with Democrats” event
runs from 9:00 to 11:00 am at Democratic Election Headquarters, 84 N. Main
St., Wellsville, and is open to all registered Democrats. Coffee, tea, and light snacks will be served.
