Steuben County Memorializes Lives Lost and Honors COVID-19 Responders

STEUBEN COUNTY, NY — On Thursday, October 17, 2024, County Legislative Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick, County Manager Jack Wheeler and Public Health Director Darlene Smith unveiled a plaque dedicated to memorializing the 300 residents of Steuben County who lost their lives to the COVID-19 pandemic and the first responders, medical personnel, and essential workers who played pivotal roles during the COVID-19 response. The plaque is located at the Civil Defense Training Center (7220 State Route 54, Bath, NY).

 

The dedication ceremony provided a moment of gratitude and remembrance, reflecting on the tremendous sacrifices made during the crisis and acknowledging the deep loss experienced by so many families.

 

“Our intent for this COVID-19 memorial is to provide a space for all in the community to remember those that we lost and to honor those who sacrificed so much during the response. We hope it provides a measure of peace, acceptance, and resolution to those affected,” said Steuben County Public Health Director Darlene Smith.

 

The plaque stands as a lasting tribute to the collective efforts of the county's healthcare professionals, emergency workers, and other essential personnel who responded to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, and to the individuals and families whose lives were forever changed by the virus.
