At The Village of Wellsville Board meeting Monday night Mayor Randy Shayler made a plea for people to wear masks.
“I realize that everyone has constitutional rights,” Shayler said at the meeting. “But this is a serious time, but we'll get through it. I think it is irresponsible not to wear a mask. If you choose not to wear a mask, then stay home and don’t endanger others.”
He offered the village board’s condolences to the families of the eight local people who have passed away due to the Coronavirus and to the 311 people who have been confirmed to have had the virus.
Including Saturday’s Halloween Trick or Treating in his personal plea, Shayler continued, “Wear a mask when opening the door to children. If you don't want to wear a mask when you open the door then don't open your door. These kids don't need candy that badly. We need to be safe. We need to be smart.”
Halloween takes place in the village from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Trick or Treaters are asked to only knock on doors where porch lights are illuminated.
If residents don’t want to participate, they should turn off porch lights.
Shayler also noted, along with Police Chief Tim O’Grady that no vandalism will be tolerated either on Halloween night or Election night the following Tuesday adding that violators will be punished.
“Vandalism is a crime, and it will not be tolerated,” Shayler emphasized.
Shayler also passed on to the board the concern of a local resident concerning the lack of traffic lines denoting traffic lanes at the intersection of Main and East State Streets and speeding on West State Street endangering pedestrians, children and people walking dogs.
Shayler asked Department of Public Works Director William Whitfield to investigate it.
It was also noted at the meeting that after 19 years of service to the village, Director Whitfield will retire in Nov. 2021.
