Sports Complex possible for Jericho Hill

TOWN OF ALFRED TALK

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MAY 14, 2020 TOWN BOARD MEETING

Dan Acton, Supervisor

SPORTS COMPLEX ON JERICHO HILL AND SOLAR LAW

Many community residents zoomed into the monthly board meeting to hear a presentation by representatives of Alfred University about a proposed sports complex on the playing fields at the top of Jericho Hill. In brief it would include a rugby field, football field with bleachers, and a domed facility for tennis, basketball, and related activities. It would be accomplished in two phases and the start date, dependent on funding, has not been determined.

Residents expressed concerns about the project including the detrimental effects of increased light, sound, water runoff, and traffic. Residents expressed concern for the possibility of more accidents, especially during the winter months, on this section of County Road 12. When asked about water and sewage residents learned that the university is considering the feasibility of extending village water and sewage to the complex.

The presentation and question/answer period continued for some time. At the conclusion the supervisor pointed out that no request for a building permit has been received by the town. When that occurs residents will again have an opportunity to voice their opinions on the project.

The other major topic of the evening was a proposed solar law presented by Planning Board Chairperson Bill Dailey. The Planning Board spent many months developing the proposal which covers both residential and commercial installations, permitting, siting, and decommissioning. The proposal will be reviewed by the town attorney after which there will be a public hearing and a review by the county planning board.
