ALFRED, NY – As part of its 2019 Alumni Reunion, June 7-9, Alfred University is hosting a pair of events that will shine a spotlight on the host of artisans and craftspeople prevalent in Alfred and the surrounding area, who reflect the University’s “maker culture.”
“Makers on Main Street” will be held on Friday, June 7, on Main Street in Alfred, between Pine and Church streets. The event, scheduled for 4-7 p.m., is touted by Reunion organizers as “a celebration of the artists, crafters, growers, farmers, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, authors, students, and entrepreneurs in our community.”
“Makers on Main Street” celebrates what makers do — what you make, how you make it and the enthusiasm and passion that drives you. Open to all ages, our community comes together to learn, share, play and make. This community event inspires everyone to become a maker, and to connect with Alfred’s makers.”
Area artists and artisans are invited to set up on Main Street and “show off their skills,” demonstrating how they make their wares. They are encouraged to interact with the public, allowing visitors to try their hand at creating.
On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the third annual “Allegany Artisans ‘Together’ with Friends Art and Craft Sale” will be held in the Galanis Family Arena gymnasium, in Alfred University’s McLane Center.
Original, hand-crafted items will be available at the Art and Craft Sale, a popular Reunion event for both alumni and the public. Vendors are provided a booth space but are responsible for bringing their own tables, chairs, displays, etc.
Organizers say of the event: “Allegany Artisans ‘Together’ With Friends allows all Allegany Artisans to participate and show together, along with local and alumni artists, crafters and makers under one roof, making this show a one-of-a-kind in the Southern Tier!”
Registration for the “Makers on Main Street” event is $10, while reserving space for the Allegany Artisans “Together” with Friends Art and Craft Sale costs $20. Artisans who participate both days will pay a discounted total fee of $20. All registration costs go toward the marketing of these events.
