On September 13th in the Republican primary, there are two very different choices and views for the office of Sheriff. Walt Mackney, whom I’ve known for 40 years, offers taxpayers a new vision of leadership, change, and accountability going forward.
After a distinguished career with the New York State Police,
ascending to the position of Senior Investigator, Walt has the credentials and
the wisdom to head the counties lead law enforcement agency. Please consider
the following facts as you go to the polls in September:
• Walt believes that the counties drug crisis is a major
primary issue. As the leader of the multi-county Drug Task force, while with
the State Police, it was Walt’s priority to rid our streets and towns of all
harmful substances and criminals. This is a stance he takes today working for
the Steuben County District Attorney’s office. Walt knows that more can be done
from the Allegany County Sheriff’s office. This includes reuniting two Sheriff
department employees back to the Drug Task force as compared to them working cases
on their own as is currently being done.
• Walt believes that anybody can say they are fiscally
responsible. He much rather prefers the idea of being fiscally accountable.
Walt believes county residents and taxpayers deserve better than the out of
control overtime figures coming from the jail at the current time. Consider
2017 alone- $1.3 million dollars EXTRA in overtime for the jail; $135,000 EXTRA
in overtime for administrators for the same year. As a county taxpayer I can’t
help but think that something is terribly broken and clearly in need of being
fixed.
• I believe it is a great injustice to county residents not
to witness a debate between both candidates. Walt believes in transparency. To
this end, he will be holding a series of town hall meetings in August and one
in September. All county residents are invited to attend, meet Walt, learn his
vision, ask questions, and weigh the facts. He will be appearing in Caneadea,
Wellsville, Almond and Cuba between August 20 – 23, and in Angelica tentatively
on September 10th.
• As a leader, Walt believes the Sheriff’s office should be
much more involved in training. This includes training for employees, local
police agencies, and civilians. Walt’s credentials and multiple certifications
make him a clear choice for training and education going forward.
• Please consider Walt’s endorsements. The magnitude of
backing and support from different police agencies, so many leaders in law
enforcement, and friends is truly overwhelming. It speaks so highly to the true
character and professionalism of Walter D. Mackney. Walt’s Facebook page:
MACKNEYFORSHERIFF exhibits these endorsements in their entirety and so much
more.
• One endorsement I would like to mention comes from a
friend and retired Allegany County Sheriff Larry Scholes. Larry has never
before endorsed a Sheriff candidate in numerous elections spanning decades,
rather, he chose to remain neutral. That is, until now. This alone speaks
volumes. Writing on Walt’s behalf and addressing county residents Larry writes,
“ we must not let this opportunity pass us by” in his support of Walt. I could
not agree more with Larry. Please vote for leadership, change, and accountability
on Thursday, September 13th. Please vote for Walt Mackney.
