On July 2, 2018 at approximately 10:02 p.m., the Livingston
County Emergency Communications Center (E-911) received a call for a serious
UTV crash on McCurdy Road in the Town of Ossian.
Emergency personnel responded to a trail located on the
south edge of the Skybrook Campgrounds where two occupants from the UTV were
seriously injured and trapped approximately 80 feet down a steep embankment.
Emergency crews were able to rescue the two from the ravine and provide medical
attention.
The preliminary investigation of the crash revealed that
several campers had gone for a ride on the trails adjacent to the campground.
One of the campers was operating a golf cart that could not climb one of the
trails. The UTV that crashed was turning around to help the stuck golf cart and
in doing so, backed up to close to the edge of the ravine causing it to roll
over backwards until it came to rest in a group of trees.
The UTV was being driven by 53-year-old John M. Clark from
Newark and 50-year-old Tammy M. Lord also from Newark was a passenger in it.
Both Clark and Lord were transported to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment
of potentially life threatening injuries; one was flown by Mercy Flight Central
and the other by Mercy Flight West.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff's
Office.
Members of the Sheriff's Office Command Staff, Patrol
Division, Criminal Investigation Division, and Forensic Identification Unit,
were on scene for the investigation. Also on scene were emergency personnel
from the Dansville Fire Department, Dansville Ambulance, and Livingston County
ALS.
