Cuba: Smoke fills Crown Y Recycling - two alarm fire UPDATED

A two-alarm fire at 10:41 a.m. today brought in equipment from two counties after smoke filled the upper level of the Crown Y Recycling facility at 2 Water Street in Cuba. 911 dispatchers told responders that workers reported smoke was filling the second floor. Shortly after arrival, a Cuba assistant fire chief requested a two-alarm response. Mutual aid was brought in from Friendship, Clarksville, New Hudson, Portville the Cattaraugus County District 4 FAST team and an engine and ladder truck from Weston Mills. Belfast, Hinsdale and Lyndon were given standby assignments.  The facility was evacuated and no injuries were reported. Cuba police shut down a portion of Water Street to aid in fire department efforts. Fire Coordinator Jeff Luckey said the cause of the problem was a disabled roof mounted heating unit. It was accidentally energized which caused it to fill the building with smoke. The was no actual fire, just smoke according to Luckey. He said once the building was cleared of smoke, operations were allowed to continue.
