ALFRED, NY – Alfred University on Tuesday announced an affiliation agreement with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM), which allows Alfred University students to apply to LECOM’s Early Acceptance Program (EAP) in three graduate tracks: osteopathic medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.
Under the agreement between LECOM and Alfred University, the LECOM College of Osteopathic Medicine, School of Pharmacy and School of Dental Medicine will offer provisional early acceptance to qualified AU students. Seniors planning to matriculate at Alfred University, or existing AU students in their first or sophomore years, will hold a provisional reserved seat at one of LECOM’s professional schools upon successful completion of an interview. Students can then pursue their required undergraduate coursework at Alfred University.
“We are pleased with the partnership with LECOM because it will help open some important graduate school opportunities for Alfred University students interested in a career in health sciences,” commented Mark Zupan, Alfred University president.
John Wojtkielewicz, director of the undergraduate affiliation program, explained the benefits of agreement to Alfred University and its students.
“It will enhance your reputation; you will have a relationship with the largest medical school in the country,” Wojtkielewicz said. He added that current affiliate institutions are drawing applications from across the country from students interested in applying for early acceptance to LECOM. “It will extend your reach across the nation. And these are top-notch students who will be coming into your program.”
The program is advantageous to students because, if given early acceptance, they will not have to compete for placement in medical, dental or pharmacy school after earning an undergraduate degree.
“They (students) get a reserved seat. If they perform on par with what a typical (medical, dental or pharmacy) student does as an undergraduate, they’ll hold that seat,” Wojtkielewicz said. “That’s a big benefit.”
Students must meet certain requirements to be considered for LECOM’s early acceptance program. High school students must have a combined SAT score of at least 1240 or an ACT score of 26 or higher, with a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students already attending an affiliate institution must have a minimum cumulative overall GPA of 3.2, with a minimum 3.1 GPA in sciences. Students must complete an interview process before being granted early acceptance, and while completing their undergraduate studies at Alfred, are required to meet minimum course requirements and academic standards.
Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine is the nation’s largest medical college, with enrollment of over 4,150. With Millcreek Community Hospital (Erie, PA) and the clinical practices of Medical Associates of Erie, it is the only Academic Health Center in the osteopathic profession. LECOM, accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, offers innovative and affordable graduate education in osteopathic medicine, pharmacy and dental medicine. LECOM also offers Master of Science programs in medical education, biomedical science, and biomedical ethics; master’s degrees in health services administration, and medical science; and a doctoral degree in anatomy education.
