Olean murder update

The man accused of killing his wife in Olean Saturday, Edward J. Smith Jr., 50 of Olean, was released from Olean General Hospital Sunday morning and brought back to the Olean Police Department for booking procedures. Captain Robert Blovsky said in a press release that Olean City Court Judge Daniel Palumbo arraigned Mr. Smith and remanded him to the Cattaraugus County jail without bail .Smith was transferred to the Cattaraugus County Jail to await a preliminary hearing in Olean City Court on Tuesday. District Attorney Lori P. Rieman and the Public Defender’s office were present for the arraignment.

An Olean man was charged Saturday with murdering a woman at the Olean House, 132 North Union Street. Olean Police Captain Robert Blovsky said Edward Smith, 50, a resident of Olean House apartment 331, was charged with 2nd degree murder, 1st degree assault and 4th degree criminal possession of a weapon. Smith is currently being treated at the Olean General Hospital and when he is released, will be brought back to the Olean Police department for booking procedures. According to Blovsky, an Olean Police patrol responded to the Olean House this morning at approximately 6:40 a.m. after being dispatched to a call of a possible Murder in apartment 331. Responding officers were met at the door of the apartment by a male and upon entering the apartment, officers located a deceased female. The male was taken into custody and Investigators worked throughout the day. Blovsky did not say what the relation was between Smith and the victim and he did not release the cause of death. Olean House is a 62 unit affordable housing community. Olean House is owned and managed by the Olean Housing Authority.
