Obituary: H. Richard “Dick” Curfman, 94, Coudersport

COUDERSPORT, PA---H. Richard “Dick” Curfman, 94, a longtime resident of Coudersport, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport. 

Born on Tuesday, October 22, 1929 in McConnellstown, Huntingdon County, PA, he was a son of Homer O. and Helen E. Lang Curfman.  On September 1, 1962 he was united in marriage to Betty A. Homolash, who survives.

 He lived his earlier years in the Huntingdon, PA area and had resided in Coudersport since 1960. 

Dick attended Walker Township Elementary School in McConnellstown and was a 1947 graduate of Huntingdon High School.  

Dick was a US Army veteran having served from 1950 to 1952 in Korea.  His military service (1948 – 1957) included him being a member of the PA National Guard Unit based in Huntingdon, both prior to and following his service in Korea. 

In the 1940’s he worked on farms in the Woodcock Valley area, was employed by Weis Market and also by Laney’s Feed Mill, both in Huntingdon.  During the 1950’s he was employed by Owens Corning Fiberglass Corporation in Huntingdon and also owned and operated a trucking (coal) business and lawn mower repair shop from his home in McConnellstown. 

Finishing first in his class, Dick was a 1960 graduate of Ross Leffler School of Conservation in Brockway.  Following graduation, he was employed by the PA Game Commission as District Game Protector stationed in Coudersport.  He also served as a US Deputy Game Warden until his Pennsylvania Game Commission retirement.  During the time (1960-1992) he intermittently served as North Central Region Land Management Supervisor, Potter-Tioga Unit Supervisor as well as with the PGC Special Investigation Unit during the 1960’s and 1970’s.  Following PGC retirement, Dick was employed by Johnson Excavating in Roulette for several summers. 

Among the many awards that Dick received while employed are the Shikar SaFari Award, the Fish and Wildlife Law Enforcement Award presented by the Northeast Law Enforcement Chief’s Association, PGC Wildlife Conservation Award, PGC Outstanding Employee Award, PGC Wildlife Officer of the Year Award, PA Fish Commission Award, and the Potter County Conservation District Awards: Conservation Education Award and the Service Award for Outstanding Service to Potter County Agriculture. 

Following retirement he was appointed to and served as a member of the Board of Directors to the PA Lumber Museum, the Potter County Planning Commission, and the Potter County Conservation District for several years.

Dick was a member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in McConnellstown since 1945.  He was accorded life memberships by the Black Forest Conservation Association and the Potter County Anglers, both of Coudersport.  He was a life member of the Standing Stone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1754 and a former (50+ year) member of the Frank P. Hommon American Legion Post 24, both of Huntingdon. 

His Masonic ties began in 1960 when he became a member of Eulalia Lodge #342 F & AM in Coudersport and a member of the Coudersport Consistory.  He was a past member of Royal Arch Chapter #263 and Potter Commandery #69, both of Coudersport. 

He was an avid hunter, trapper and outdoorsman.  His love of competition began at the early age of 10, pitching horseshoes with his elders.  It continued and he felt team and individual sports as well as his chosen occupation with PA Game Commission each afforded it.  From the mid 1940’s through the 1950’s he played baseball in the Huntingdon City and County Leagues as well as for the McConnellstown and Fiberglass Independent Teams. 

Dick repeatedly claimed his family was the most important aspect of his life and cherished any time spent with them.  Dick’s children and grandchildren’s love of the outdoors and sports was impressive and he enjoyed watching them participate. 

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 61 years; a son, Richard B. Curfman of Roulette; a daughter, Karen A. (Jerry) Johnson of Roulette; two granddaughters, Stacey A. (Craig) Kinney and Shannon M. Curfman, both of Roulette; three great-grandchildren, Karli A., Camrin K. and Mack M. Kinney; a niece, Deborah (Tom) King of Hesston, PA; a cousin, Kay (Lang) Deihl of Alexandria, PA; and several second cousins, grandnieces, and grandnephews. 

In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by a sister, Velma J. Peoples. 

To pay respects to Dick and his family, calling hours will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, February 11, 2024, and from 10am to 11am on Monday, February 12, 2024 at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, where funeral services will follow at 11am with Pastor Fred Kemp of Potter County Baptist Church, officiating. 

Members of Eulalia Lodge #148 F & AM will conduct a Masonic service at 3:30pm on Sunday in the funeral home. 

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord military honors on Monday at the funeral home.

 Family and friends are invited to attend graveside burial services at 12pm on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, in Huntingdon Memorial Gardens, Huntingdon, PA. Pastor Jack Russell of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, will officiate.

Date: Wednesday February 7, 2024 

Wellsville Police arrested Lee D. Main, age 33 of Bolivar, charging him with Aggravated DWI with a child in the Vehicle (Class E Felony), Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Vehicle 3^rd (Unclassified Misdemeanor) and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7^th (Class A Misdemeanor).  The charges stem from a traffic stop on the Bolivar Road.  Main was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson.  Main was released under pre-trial supervision by the Allegany County Probation Department.  Main is due back in Wellsville Village Court on March 19^th at 4:30 pm.  Additional charges are pending.

Obituary: Howard L. CRIPPEN, 79, of Ulysses, PA

Howard L. CRIPPEN, 79, of Ulysses, PA, died Monday, February 5, 2024 in UPMC Williamsport.  Born May 15, 1944, in Hector Township, he was the son of Louis W. “Luke” and Arvilla M. Seeley Crippen.  On September 26, 1964, in Williamson, NY, he married the former Barbara J. Blauvelt, who predeceased him on September 10, 2015.  He was employed by Ingersoll-Rand/Dresser-Rand in Painted Post, NY for 36 years.  Howard was a member of God’s New Beginnings Church in Harrison Valley.  Surviving are: two children, Howard (Laurie) Crippen, Jr. of Wolcott, NY and Judy A. Crippen of Ulysses; two grandchildren, Dustin (Mia Romeo) Saddock of Clay, NY and Delicia (Leonard LeFever) Crippen of Sodus, NY; two brothers, Paul (Peggy) Crippen of Westfield and Mike (Lil) Crippen of Sabinsville; three sisters, Christine Mitchell of Waterloo, NY, Lulu Myrick of Geneva, NY, and Elsie Young of Sabinsville; nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by four brothers, Gordon Crippen, Roger Crippen, Rial Crippen, and Melvin Crippen.  Friends may call at Olney-Foust Funeral Homes & Crematory, Ulysses on Friday, February 9, 2024 from 12:00 – 2:00 PM, with Funeral Services following at 2:00 PM.   Rev. Allegany County GOP Committee 2024 Petition Meeting Announcement

Chairman Healy has announced a meeting to be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 808, Belmont, NY 14813. The committee will distribute petitions and receive any updated information from the Board of Elections, as well as handle any committee related items in need of approval. 

 

Please note the following regarding petitions:

• Any candidate or county committee member petitions received by 4:00 p.m. on February 21 by our local Board of Elections in Belmont, NY, will be inserted into the individual petition packets for distribution to the appropriate district in which they are to be passed.
• The Board of Elections will assist with petition completion; however, candidates and committee members MUST type their own petition headers.  
• All packets will be addressed with the current address the Committee Secretary has on file. If you have had a change in address, please notify the Secretary by February 21 so that your address may be updated with the Board of Elections to complete packets for the February 28 meeting.
• Any packet not picked up at the February 28 meeting will be mailed the next day to committee members
• The entire Allegany County Republican Committee is up for re-election and must pass petitions to remain on the Committee. 
• 8th Judicial Delegates are the only “County Positions” up this year, as they are every year. Any interested parties may contact Chairman Healy. Chairman Healy or his designee will file the Judicial petitions. All other candidates or their reps are responsible for filing their petitions with the Board of Elections. District and Town chairs should also assist in this process
• ACRC District Chairs should ensure they have committee members for all those positions as well as all local offices (Town and Village), if any.

ELMIRA MAN WITH PRIOR CHILD SEX CONVICTION GOING TO PRISON ON NEW CHILD PORNOGRAHY CHARGE

 Rochester, N.Y.-U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross announced today that Eugene R. Criss, Jr., 55, of Elmira, NY, who was convicted of possession of child pornography by an individual with a prior sex offense conviction, was sentenced to serve 120 months in prison  by U.S. District Judge Charles J. Siragusa.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan K. McGuire, who handled the case, stated that in July 2013, Criss was convicted of Criminal Sex Act – 1st Degree – Victim Less Than 11 Years Old. On April 5, 2023, Criss possessed a cellphone, a thumb drive, a tablet, and a laptop, which contained over 1,000 images and videos of child pornography, some of which depicted prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct and violence or the sexual abuse of an infant or toddler.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Child Exploitation Human Trafficking Task Force, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia.

Wellsville Police arrested Juston W. Conklin, age 31 of Andover, charging him with Criminal Mischief 3^rd (Class E Felony) and Harassment 2^nd (Violation).  The charges stem from an incident that took place on Maple Avenue.  Conklin was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson.  Conklin was released and is due back in Wellsville Village Court on March 19^th at 4:30 pm.

Wellsville Police arrested Sarah L. Saintilus, age 22 of Wellsville, charging her with Criminal Mischief 4th (Class A Misdemeanor).  The charge stems from an incident that took place on Trapping Brook Road on January 26th.  Saintilus was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson.  Saintilus was released. Saintilus is due back in Wellsville Village Court on April 2nd at 4:30 pm.

Cuba police arrest escapee

On Tuesday February 6th, 2024 at approximately 1:00PM, Cuba Police arrested Adam L. Simzer (41) of Canaseraga, NY. Simzer was arrested in the Town of Nunda after the Cuba Police Department received an anonymous tip. Simzer was taken into custody by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office after a brief pursuit. Simzer was turned over to the Cuba Police Department for processing. Simzer was charged with escape 2nd (Felony), criminal contempt 1st (2 counts, Felonies), grand larceny 3rd (Felony) and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (Felony). Simzer was processed and sent to the Allegany County Jail to await arraignment. Simzer is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Obituary: Elwin Lewis GEER, 83, of Rexville, NY, formerly of Wellsville

Elwin Lewis GEER, 83, of Rexville, NY, formerly of Wellsville, died Monday, February 5, 2024 in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.  Born August 4, 1940, in Wellsville, he was the son of Raymond Elwin and LaNora Aline Fanton Geer.  On July 23, 2004, in Scio, he married the former Elsie Potter Davis, who survives.  A 1959 graduate of Wellsville High School, he was employed by Frederick Mulholland at Mulholland Funeral Home in Wellsville while in school from 1952 to October 1959.  In October 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served until July 1962, honorably discharged as Shipfitter (pipefitter) Petty Officer 3rd Class.  Elwin was employed by C.E. Air Preheater in Wellsville as a welder/fitter from September 1963 to July 1980.  He moved to Florida in 1980 and returned to Wellsville in 1993.  He was employed by Current Control in Wellsville from May 1995 until his retirement in October 2010.  Elwin was a member of Christian Temple Church, now Grace United Church, for over 50 years, Morrison Hayes American Legion Post #702 in Wellsville, ACRES (Allegany County Radio Emergency Service) CB radio club, Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and was one of the original members of the Civil Defense Rescue Squad.  He enjoyed doing paint by number paintings and bead banners.  Surviving besides his wife, Elsie, are: six children, Cheryl (Jeff) Lewis of Crawfordville, FL, Sandra (Gregg) Penczak of Freedom, PA, Robin (Paul) Hosmer of Apopka, FL, Merrie (Robin) Main of Scio, David Geer and Benton (Kristie) Geer, both of Bushnell, FL; four step-children, Alfred (Deborah) Anthony of Spencerport, Deborah (Mark) Kinem of Jamestown, Gregory Anthony of Whitesville, and Jeffrey Anthony of Arab, AL; 14 grandchildren, Jeffery (Megan) Lewis Jr., Heather (Thomas) Callaway, Amber Edwards, Tyler Edwards, Stefani (Kwiatkowski) Hosmer, Richard Hosmer, Jocelyn Hosmer, Presley (William) Johnson, Nicholas Hosmer, Olivia Hosmer, Anthony Hosmer, Cheyenne Geer, Justin Geer, and Rachel Mae Main; 14 step-grandchildren, Abigail Kinem, Joseph (Larissa) Kinem, Jared Kinem, John Gabriel Kinem, Jason Kinem, Ben Kinem, Amanda (Ravi) Dial, Katelyn (Justin) Richardson, Sean Anthony, Zachary Anthony, Cherokee Pensyl, Orin Anthony, Aurora Anthony, and Kayla Anthony; three great-grandchildren, Aaron Hunter Callaway, Austin Daniel Callaway, and Bristol Rae Cummins; seven step-great-grandchildren, Madison Jade Dial, Gavin Michael Dial, Kyan Cardis, Jax David Kinem, Theo Kinem, Charlotte Richardson, and Levi James Richardson; a brother, Carl R. Webster, age 34 of Wellsville, charging her with Petit Larceny (Class A Misdemeanor).  The charge stems from an incident that took place at 7 Eleven on January 4th.  Webster was processed, issued an appearance ticket and released.  Webster is due to appear in Wellsville Village Court on February 20th at 4:30 pm.

Wellsville Police arrested Kristopher R. Jablonski, age 30 of Wellsville, charging him with Criminal Contempt 2nd (Class A Misdemeanor).  The charge stems from an incident that took place on North Brooklyn Avenue.  Jablonski was processed and arraigned before Wellsville Village Justice Thompson.  Jablonski was committed to the Allegany County Jail on $1,000.00 cash bail or $2,000.00 property bond or $10,000.00 partially secured bond.  Jablonski is due back in Wellsville Village Court on March 5th at 4:30 pm.

Wellsville Police arrested Joshua I. Fletcher, age 26 of Bolivar, charging him with Endangering the Welfare of a Child (Class A Misdemeanor).  The charge stems from an incident that took place on the Bolivar Road.  Fletcher was processed, issued an appearance ticket and released.  Fletcher is due to appear in Wellsville Village Court on February 20th at 4:30 pm.

Man dies at Cuba Lake

 

A Cuba man was killed after falling through the ice on Cuba Lake. The scene unfolded Saturday afternoon near his home on West Shore Road. Daniel Whitford was pronounced dead at Olean General. A second man also fell through the ice but his condition is unknown. Attempts to reach Cuba Police Chief Dustin Burch have been unsuccessful. Cuba fire chief Justin  Sweet told the (Olean) Times “ It’s sad.” The investigation continues.

Obituary: Marylu E. Buck, 88, Wellsville

Wellsville, NY – Marylu E. Buck, 88, formerly of East Genesee Street, passed away on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at Highland Park Healthcare Center. She was born on January 22, 1936, the daughter of the late William B. and Marguerite L. (Hanson) Buck. 

Marylu was a life-long resident of Wellsville, graduating from Wellsville High School in 1954. She continued her education, earning her bachelor’s degree. She began her career in education but sacrificed her career to care for her parents. She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She will be remembered as a well-dressed, familiar, and friendly face around town. 

She is survived by her church family and several good friends. 

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 11 am, in St. John’s Episcopal, burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery of Wellsville, with Reverend Carol Stewart presiding. Allegany County Sheriff Scott Cicirello reports that on February 5, 2024, Deputies of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office arrested Ashely Curry, age 33, of Scio, New York. It is alleged that Curry, did knowingly and with intent to defraud presented false documents and information to the Allegany County Department of Social Services and in doing so obtained benefits of $3480.  Curry was charged with Offering a False Written instrument in the first degree a Class E Felony, Grand Larceny 3^rd and Welfare Fraud 3^rd both Class D Felonies. 

 

Curry was arraigned and released on her own recognizance to reappear at the Village of Belmont Court at a later date.

 

The Allegany County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Allegany County Department of Social Services Fraud Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.

Obituary: Richard D. Stewart, 47, Friendship

Richard D. Stewart III, 47, of Maple Grove Road, Friendship, passed way Friday, February 2, 2024 at home.

 Born on May 8, 1976, in Corning, he was a son of Richard D. Stewart, II and Anita Hoad Parulski.  On May 10, 1997, in Bath, he married the former Cristin M. McKenna who survives.  

Rich was a graduate of Haverling High School Class of 1994.  He later graduated from Houghton College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

 He started working for Friendship Dairies over twenty years ago, and continued on as a Regional Quality Manager for Saputo Cheese USA, Inc. 

Rich enjoyed raising horses, cows, goats, and chickens with his wife and daughters.  He also enjoyed volunteering with the 4-H program and gardening.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family, they were the center of his world. 

He had served on the Friendship Central School Board of Education and had attended the Cuba First Baptist Church.

Obituary: Bruce Anthony (Brice) McGinley Hirst, 57, of Pensacola, FL

Bruce Anthony (Brice) McGinley Hirst, 57, of Pensacola, FL passed away January 16, 2024 after a chronic illness.

He was born in Olean, NY to John and Kathleen (McGinley) Hirst. Brice enjoyed nature, hiking, and the ocean. He had many memorable adventures while living in Florida, Tennessee, and Hawaii. His greatest loves were his Mom, his triplet nieces that he helped raise, and his dogs. As an adult, Brice made many lifelong friends in his travels.

Brice was predeceased by his infant brother Brad Hirst, his Grandparents Lila and Mark Boyd, Jane and Donald Hirst, Stepmother Marjie Hirst, Aunts Judy Wakefield and Linda (Soupy) Kendzior, Uncle Robert Hirst, cousin John Kendzior, and his pups Maddie, Zeke, Kahanna, Deliah, and Mickey.

Timothy J. WHITE, 62, of Mansfield, PA, formerly of New Holland and Harrison Valley, died Wednesday, January 31, 2024 in Hershey Medical Center.  Born May 9, 1961, in Coudersport, he was the son of Thomas G. White and Shirley Dunham White Davis.  A 1979 graduate of Northern Potter High School, he was employed by WW Disposal and owned and operated T. White Trucking for over 20 years, retiring in 2018.  Surviving are: his mother and step-father, Shirley and Bill Davis of Ellisburg; five brothers, Thomas G. White, II of Westfield, Todd L. COUDERSPORT, PA---Ronald D. Nelson, 82, a lifelong resident of Coudersport, died February 2, 2024, with his loving family by his side in UPMC Cole, Coudersport. 

He was born September 2, 1941, in Coudersport, the son of Arnold and Antoinette “Tillie” Walaski Nelson. 

Ron proudly graduated from the Coudersport High School, Class of 1959 and attended Williamsport Technical Institute and served NFG as a Corrosion Specialist. After his retirement, he landed his dream job at Coolridge Potato Farm. 

He married fellow classmate, Kristine Fisher. They celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage and made many memories at Red Pine. They have three daughters, Lori (Gregory) Sevinsky of Lisbon, NH, Teri (Brent) Beacker of Coudersport and Aimee (Arnold) Wykoff of Kunkletown, PA; five grandchildren, Regan (Pete) Sevinsky, Tara (Nick) Gregsak, Skyler (Tim) Gaberseck, Logan (Amber) Marshall and Alexis (Brock) Wilson; 6 great grandchildren, Tye, Brynn, Joseph, Kane, Garrett, Anna and two precious ones on the way.

 Throughout his life he cherished his family above all else, starting with his mother Tillie, sisters Beverly Coppersmith and Ruth Hults (deceased) and brother Arnold Nelson, along with several nieces and nephews.

 Ron was a loyal member of the Knights of Columbus where he earned his 4th Degree. He was involved with the Coudersport Jaycees, St. Eulalia Yardbirds, and he lived by the motto of serving others. He was an avid Coudersport Falcon sports fan, fisherman, hunter, golfer and outdoorsman. He was also well known for his canning, pickling and jerky making.

 Family and friends may call from 10am to 11am on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at the St. Eulalia Gathering Space, 6 Maple Street, Coudersport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11am in St. Eulalia Catholic Church, with the Rev. Christopher Wheeler, as celebrant. Burial will be in Sweden Hill Cemetery, Coudersport.

Kenneth W. Wieder  “beloved father, faithful servant of the Lord” 

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA---Kenneth W. Wieder, 89, of Shinglehouse, formerly of Perkasie, went to be with his heavenly Father on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after a long illness. 

Born on Monday, December 3, 1934 in Lenark, he was a son of William H. and Pauline Lapp Wieder.  On April 23, 1960, he married Kay F. Lesh, who went to be with the Lord on June 24, 2016. 

Ken was a graduate of Allentown (PA) High School.  He honorably served in the US Air Force.  He was employed at the former Hysol Company in Olean, NY. 

He was a member of Grace Bible Independent Baptist Church in Shinglehouse, where he was active in the Seedline Scripture Ministries program. A gifted singer, Ken sang in the church choir.  He was faithful in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.  His favorite verse was Ephesians 2: 8,9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast”. 

Surviving are two daughter, Kelly Wieder and Kathy Hope, both of Shinglehouse; a son, Kris Wieder of Shinglehouse; five siblings, Gilbert Wieder Marlene Wright, Robert Wieder, Dale Wieder, and Barry Wieder; and several nieces and nephews. 

Ken was predeceased by his parents and wife; and three siblings, Joyce McEllroy, Larry Wieder, and Charles Wieder. 

Ken will be laid to rest next to his wife in the East Sharon Cemetery, Shinglehouse. 

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 11am on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at the Grace Bible Independent Baptist Church, 392 Coon Crossing Road, Shinglehouse.  Pastor Phil Seely will officiate.

Barn fire in Andover

The fire sirens rang during the noon hour Friday. Andover was dispatched to a fully engulfed barn fire at 3893 Swain Hill Road. Extra help was called in from Wellsville, Whitesville, Alfred Station and Almond. There were no initial reports of injuries.

2/1/24 11:40 a.m.- State Police arrested Caleb J. Kessler, 25, of Clarksville. He was charged with two counts of aggravated unlicensed operation, criminal contempt for allegedly violating an order of protection and criminal possession of stolen property. He was released on his own recognizance.

2/1/24 6:37 p.m.- During a traffic stop in the Town of Amity, state police arrested Clifton J. Miller, 24, of Angelica. He was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation. He was initially detained.

2/1/24 10:42 a.m.- State police based in Bath arrested Logan T. Ost, 33, Dylon W. Loper, 23 and Tyler J. Conner, 31. Each was charged with felony burglary stemming from an incident in Avoca. They were also charged with burglary for incidents in Howard and Hornellsville. They were all detained.

Steuben: CR 119 bridge closed beginning Monday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DATE: Feb. 2, 2024 - The County Route 119 Bridge the Town of Canisteo will be closed to all through traffic from 7:30 am to 4 pm beginning Monday (Feb. 5) through Feb. 8. The bridge is located over the Canisteo River between State Route 36 and County Road 128 and will be closed to remove debris from the bridge piers. There will be no detour.

Obituary: Mandi Lynn Swanson, 43, Bolivar

BOLIVAR – Mandi Lynn Swanson, 43, passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday (January 30, 2024) at FF Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.

Mandi was born on July 27, 1980 in Wellsville to Donald S. and Kathy L. (Williams) Irish. She graduated from Bradford Regional High School in 1999.

Mandi is survived by her two children Jameson R. Irish and Phoenix A. Irish both of Bolivar; a sister, Donielle (Lyle) Champlin of Bolivar; two nephews, Darien Champlin and Jefferey Champlin; and a niece Lakoda Champlin.

She is predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Taeler L. Irish; a sister, Shawna Helms; and nephew, Jaxson Dimpfl.

In her younger years Mandi traveled the country, she was proud to say she had been to California to Massachusetts to everywhere in between. Mandi took delight in playing games, chitchatting, and always having music playing to sing along with. Much of Mandi’s time was spent caring for her children. She showed her love by planning all-out birthday parties for her kids to enjoy, often recruiting the entire family to help.  Time spent with family was what she cherished most.

Mandi regularly attended Southside Union Chapel in Bolivar.

Visitation will be held on Sunday (February 4) from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Baker-Swan Funeral Home in Wellsville/Scio. The funeral service will take place at the funeral home immediately following the visitation with Rev. Dave Hearns of South Side Union Chapel of Olean officiating.  

St. Bonaventure University radio station sending six students to join radio row at the Super Bowl

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., Feb. 1, 2024 — St. Bonaventure University students will be making a buzz at the Super Bowl again this year. That’s “buzz” as in WSBU 88.3 FM The Buzz, the student-run campus radio station.

Six SBU students will join the throng of media professionals from around the world who will flock to Las Vegas next week for Super Bowl LVIII. The students will travel to Vegas on Saturday and spend the week before the Feb. 11 game on radio row, conducting interviews and preparing features for nightly three-hour broadcasts on The Buzz.

WSBU is one of a select few college radio stations among dozens of national and international news outlets welcomed to radio row during Super Bowl Week. This marks the sixth time since 2018 that The Buzz has sent a team to radio row. (Access wasn’t allowed in 2021 because of COVID protocols.)

It will be a busy week of early mornings and long days that extend into the evening hours as the SBU team races deadline each day to collect and package programming for the nightly broadcasts, but the reward is being immersed in one of the country’s most popular sports and entertainment spectacles.

“It’s really cool just to see it and be part of it all,” said Steven Stutz, a senior marketing major from Buffalo who has been with WSBU since he was a freshman and station manager for the past year and a half. “We’ll attend Monday’s Opening Night (formerly known as Media Day) when you get to see the teams and players. We’ll set up our microphone with all the others and get to ask questions.”

Radio row is set up in the Las Vegas Convention Center, a short distance from Allegiant Stadium, where the game will be played. The students will arrive each day at 8 a.m. and spend the next eight hours conducting interviews and packaging content for broadcast.

Some guests are already scheduled, Stutz said, including four NFL players, a sports betting and prediction expert, and the president of a slap boxing league in Nevada.

Other guests will include former players and other notables who “table hop” down radio row, as well as other people the SBU team can snag for an interview. “We’ll pick interesting people out of the crowd and pretty much just play with it and see where it goes,” Stutz said.

During the day Stutz will be packaging content for each evening’s radio broadcasts, which will air from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday on WSBU 88.3 FM. The live stream may be accessed from the station’s website: https://wsbufm.com/.

The students, who will be missing a week of classes back on campus, will work online each night to keep up with their studies. “Professors know this is a great opportunity and are excited for us. They’re very good about making accommodations,” Stutz said.

Students conducted fundraisers and sold on-air ads to help pay for the trip.

Other students making the journey include Thomas Baia, a senior from Wilson, New York; Isaac Howson, a junior from Buffalo, New York; Stephen Scheppner, a junior from Erie, Pennsylvania; Nathan Solomon, a senior from Freeville, New York; and Jonathan Walker, a senior from Webster, New York. All are sports media majors in the Jandoli School of Communication.

They’ll return to campus on Saturday, Feb. 10, in time to be among the three in four Americans expected to watch the Super Bowl on TV.

Causer to Host EMS Task Force Meeting

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) announced he will convene a meeting of the EMS Task Force on Thursday, Feb. 15, starting at 6 p.m. at the McKean County Department of Emergency Services.

 

Anthony Martin, director of the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services at the PA Department of Health, will attend to discuss efforts to support ambulance companies statewide.

 

“This is a great opportunity for our local EMS leaders to hear from Director Martin and share their concerns with the Department of Health,” Causer said. “While we are making progress on policies to support our emergency medical services providers, there is still much work to be done.”

 

Most recently, a new state law increased Medicaid reimbursement rates for ambulance companies across the state. Act 15 of 2023 ties the reimbursement rates to federal Medicare rates and pays whichever amount is higher. As a result, the reimbursement for basic life support ambulance trips increases from $325 to $511.35, and for advanced life support ambulance trips from $400 to $607.23 or $878.88, depending on the nature of the call. The reimbursement for paramedic intercept increases from $80 to $456.19.

 

The new law also ensures EMS agencies are reimbursed by Medicaid for 100% of the miles they travel with a patient on board receiving care or transport, finally removing the previous exemption for the first 20 miles traveled. The law increases the mileage reimbursement rate from $4 per loaded mile to $13.20 per loaded mile.

 

The lawmaker strongly encouraged local government officials to join the meeting, as they are critical to finding solutions to help keep emergency medical services up and running.

He was detained.
