Since the WVAC began billing insurance, there has been spending to upgrade operations. Those upgrades have included new Rescue vehicles, adding (or returning) a fourth ambulance. increased training, a recent facelift of the interior and exterior of the building and most notably, the addition of paid staff members for key position. As volunteer rates for emergency services have been declining, WVAC has worked to offset that change.
In the February 21, 2024 minutes of the Friendship town board it was noted that:
SUPERVISOR CONCERNS:
Friendship Ambulance Status-Our ambulance is out of service. Need a creative action, need a
standby ready agreement. Do not have anyone to do paperwork, and the paperwork is not in order.
The newer rig needs a lot of work, can’t operate currently.
Ambulance Stand Ready Requirement-MTS has offered to cover Friendship, their fee is $10,000.00 annually to cover the Town. Paying this would make the budget tight, might be able to negotiate a lower fee. Have to have certificate of medical necessity. Only choice Friendship or MTS. MTS has already been covering and Supervisor Hall voiced he thought they should keep doing it. Terms were reached about 2023.
On that topic, Angelica EMS/Rescue has also gone by the wayside. The town also began contracting with MTS for 24/7 ambulance service in about 2022. The NYS Department of Health updated directory indicated Angelica Rescue was no longer recognized in its database.
