Steuben County Sheriff's Blotter

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on July 18, 2019, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested Paul E. Jones, Jr., age 38, of County Route 119, Rathbone, New York. The Sheriff’s Office, in June of 2019, received a tip to check the welfare of animals allegedly not being fed on Welch Road in Cameron Mills, New York. This investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant and the seizure of 24 live animals as well as evidence of deceased animals. All live animals were treated and classified by a licensed veterinarian. Mr. Jones was charged with 18 counts of Overdriving, failing to provide proper sustenance. All charges are Misdemeanors of the New York State Agriculture and Market Law. Mr. Jones was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Town of Rathbone Court at a later date for these charges.

Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that on July 15, 2019, deputies of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Smith, age 33 who is currently incarcerated at the Steuben County Jail, Bath New York. It is alleged that in July 2018, Mr. Smith used a Steuben County Department of Social Services Benefit card, issued to another person while that person was incarcerated at the Steuben County Jail. Mr. Smith used the benefit card to make four separate transactions in the total amount of $34.06. As a result, Mr. Smith obtained benefits which he was not entitled nor authorized to receive. Mr. Smith is charged with four counts of Misuse of Food Stamps, a class A misdemeanor in violation of New York State Social Services Law. He was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.
The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.
