This is from Chemung County Sheriff William A. Schrom:
Local Law Enforcement, the Traffic Safety Board and the Southern Tier Bicycle League have partnered again this year in promoting safe bicycling with our youth. This is accomplished through positive reinforcement by issuing any youngster an "ice cream ticket" if they are spotted by law enforcement wearing a protective helmet while operating a bicycle safely. This is done with the hopes of encouraging all bicyclists regardless of age to wear a bicycle helmet and other protective gear that may be necessary to keep themselves safe anytime they are operating a bicycle.
We would really like to thank the following ice cream companies for their generous participation with this program: The Dairy Barn, Fair Shake, Lickety Split, Rita’s Water Ice, Serendipity Ice Cream & Coffee, Sweet Frog Yogurt and Last Stand.
Attached is a recent photo of Deputy James Goodwin, who had spotted a youngster, Carter, age 3, in full compliance, and issued him a deserving "ice cream ticket".
