TRAVEL ADVISORY
1-day Construction Detour of Interstate 86 East from Almond to Hornell
Tuesday, October 9
Town of Hornellsville, Steuben County
New York State Department of Transportation today announced that Interstate 86 east between Exit 33, Almond and Exit 34, Hornell will be closed from approximately 7 am until 7 pm on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.
This road closure is required to allow completion of paving up to the bridge that carries I-86 eastbound over County Route 65 and Norfolk Southern Railroad. During the closure motorists traveling eastbound will leave the highway at Exit 33, Almond, travel 21 north to Hornell, then State Route 36 north to Exit 34 where they will continue onto I-86 East.
Motorists may encounter flaggers, lane shifts, and will experience travel delays.
It is imperative that motorists remember to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones they will encounter this season.
Recently, NYSDOT and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee unveiled a new public service announcement and social media campaign focused on the importance of respecting flagging personnel. This year’s work zone safety campaign, “Flaggers have families too,” is designed to remind motorists that flagging personnel are not attempting to disrupt traffic – they are simply doing their jobs and want to get home safely at the end of each work day. The PSA can be viewed here and here.
Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
