Communication to improve between emergency responders in Steuben

BATH – Communication between volunteer fire departments and their counterparts in emergency medical and law enforcement in Steuben County is expected to improve by early next year. The improvement is part of a state-funded State Interoperable Communications Grant for radio technology which supports connections between all emergency response units throughout the county. Fire service agencies in Steuben have used the existing system since the late 1950’s to early 1960’s, according to Timothy Marshall, Director of Steuben County Emergency Services. “Enhancements over the years have increased coverage and capabilities, but the need for new technology and partnerships has grown in recent years,” he said. The upgrade, supported by the county’s technology consultant Televate and radio vendor Motorola, was approved Monday by the county Legislature’s Public Safety and Corrections Committee, with final approval expected by the full Legislature Aug. 27.
