Arkport, Canaseraga School's Continue to Talk Merger

A meeting earlier this month, officials with the Arkport and Canaseraga central school boards discussed their potential merger.  According to a memo from the meeting, Arkport Central would be the annexing district, and the new district would be Arkport-Canaseraga Central School District.  Academic programs offered in both districts “would be expanded as determined (by the new board)…” and “all current faculty and staff of both districts would be maintained for a minimum of five years with reductions by attrition when appropriate.”   Upon a successful annexation vote, “student representatives from both districts will be given an opportunity to make recommendations… for the combined districts mascot, school colors and alma mater.  Until then, uniforms for both schools will be used where appropriate with the goal of producing budget economies.”  The memo also outlined a proposed timetable: the study will be completed next April, followed by a state Education Department review.  The study will be presented to Arkport and Canaseraga boards in June or July next year.  Public information and discussion meetings would be held during July and August.
