DANSVILLE, NY – At UR Medicine Noyes Health, we understand that your time is valuable, but your health is priceless.
That’s why we are happy to announce it will hold a Saturday Screening Day on October 19 from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. at Nicholas H. Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Mammograms and Low Dose Lung Cancer Screenings will be available that day.
Mammograms – Walk-ins welcome, appointments appreciated. Call 585-335-4236 to schedule, or schedule through MyChart. Referrals are not required.
Screening mammograms are used to find any breast changes in women who have no signs of breast cancer. While self-exams are important, a mammogram can find a tumor before it can be felt.
“Regular screening mammograms help detect potential breast cancer at the earliest possible time which improves outcomes,” said Jill Lawton, Lead Mammography Technician at UR Medicine Noyes Health. “We calculate each patient's risk of developing breast cancer which is provided to them in your result letter following your mammogram. Being informed about your risk can help you and your doctor create a personalized screening plan and lifestyle changes to reduce your risk.”
The American Cancer Society recommends women who have no symptoms of breast cancer and are at average risk have a screening mammogram every year starting at age 40.
Talk with your healthcare provider to find out which screening guidelines are right for you.
If you are at higher risk for breast cancer, talk with your provider about:
- Starting screening mammograms earlier
- Having additional tests such as a breast ultrasound or MRI
- Having mammograms more often
If you are uninsured or underinsured, Cancer Services Program of the Finger Lakes Region will pay for your mammogram. They will be on-site October 19 to help you through the process.
Lung Cancer Screening – Appointments and referrals are required
The low-dose CT scan uses x-rays to create detailed three-dimensional photos of a patient's lungs. A minimal amount of radiation is used for this test compared to some other diagnostic CT studies.
For this painless test, patients will lay on a table as it passes through the CT scanner. The scans are read by a University of Rochester radiologist.
Screening is recommended for anyone who meets these criteria:
- Are age 50-80
- Are a current smoker or have quit in the past 15 years
- Have at least a 20 pack-year history of smoking. A pack-year is one pack of cigarettes per day per year. So, one pack per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years would both be 20 pack-years.
