ALFRED, NY – Andrew Kless, assistant professor of history at Alfred University, has earned a prestigious honor for his doctoral dissertation at the University of Rochester. Kless’s thesis, titled “Infighting at the Front: The German Occupation of Poland, 1914-1915,” was recently named winner of the 2020 Young Scholars Competition for German Studies in America.
The award, presented by Peter Lang, an academic publisher specializing in the humanities and social sciences, is accompanied by a book contract. Kless’s book, Infighting at the Front: Officers, Bureaucrats, and Politicians at War in German-Occupied Russian Poland, 1914–1915, is scheduled for winter 2021 publication.
Kless defended his thesis this past spring before receiving his doctoral degree in history from the University of Rochester. For the last three years, Kless served as visiting lecturer in history. His appointment as assistant professor of history in Alfred University’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Division of Human Studies, begins in August.
Kless earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Syracuse in 2008. He holds master’s degrees in history from the Maxwell School of Syracuse University (2010) and the University of Rochester (2016).
