Complete Obituary: Dorothea A. “Dot” Somogyi, 92, a longtime resident of Ulysses

ULYSSES, Pa.---Dorothea A. “Dot” Somogyi, 92, a longtime resident of Ulysses, passed away in her home with her loving daughter by her side on Friday, March 6, 2020, after a long illness.
Born on Monday, August 29, 1927 in the Town of Allen, N.Y., she was a daughter of Clarence A. and Eleanor M. Griggs Steadman.  On July 24, 1948 in Scio, N.Y., she married Henry W. Somogyi, who passed away on November 28, 2013.
Dot was a graduate of Fillmore (N.Y.) High School, Class of 1944.  She worked for the US Postal Service for 20 years, 16 of which were as a Postmaster, retiring in 1989 as Postmaster of the Ulysses Post Office.
Dot was a member of NAPUS (National Association of Postmasters of the United States), a member of the Mailhandler’s Union, a life member of Carl E. Hyde Legion Auxiliary Unit #963, Ulysses, and a member of the Tri-Town Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.   Dot enjoyed bowling, quilting, snowmobiling, four wheeling, hunting and fishing. 
Dot was honored by the Ulysses Area Improvement Association when they named her 2019 Ulysses Area Outstanding Citizen.
Dot and her family thank the many dedicated nurses, caregivers and volunteers who were so kind and helpful.  Especially close to her heart were her nieces, Judith Ziegler and Diane Thompson, and special friends, Alice Barber, Carmie Barker and Sandy Potocki."  
Surviving are a daughter, Yolonda J. “Lonnie” (Kari “Finn” Karhio) Somogyi of Ulysses; a sister, Patricia Morse (Carl) Holmes of Cuba, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Norbert Sylor of Arizona and Richard Wendland of Fillmore, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dot was predeceased by five sisters, Wilma Sylor, Marjorie Kozlowski, Ruth Wendland, Virginia Steadman, and Althea Martin.
In keeping with Dot’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ulysses American Legion Auxiliary Unit #963 Scholarship Fund, PO Box 236, Ulysses, PA 16948.
Dot entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, Pa.
