Binghamton police officers rescue man after explosion and fire, receive praise

On Monday at approximately 5:29 p.m., the Binghamton Police Department Patrol Division responded to 283 Front Street, the One Stop gas station, for a report of a car fire and explosion.
Upon Police Officer Farrant’s arrival, he found the vehicle and a gas pump were engulfed in flames, and was advised that the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside.  Officer Farrant ran to the vehicle, and found the driver to be unconscious. Officer Farrant, with the assistance of Police Officer Chewens, was able to gain entry to the vehicle and pull the operator from the burning vehicle to safety.  It was later found that the driver of the vehicle had suffered a medical condition, causing the accident.

Police Chief Joseph T. Zikuski commends Police Officers Farrant’s and Chewens’ quick actions and sound judgment. Their response in connection with this incident "is in keeping with the highest traditions of the police profession, and the Binghamton Police Department."
