Letter to the Editor: "The Civil War of Alma"

Dear Editor:

"The Civil War of Alma"
The town board of Alma is not acting in the best interests of its citizens or the town. They appear to be an entity of and for itself. It is said that the town supervisor has a grudge against our elected highway superintendent. The town supervisor has accused our highway superintendent of stealing the town's scrap monies. I myself saw this money and the receipts turned in, counted and recorded by the town clerk along with everyone else at that board meeting. As has been Alma's policy for more than 30 years, these monies have been used for shared work days, to supply the areas road workers with their basic human needs.
When did the board change this policy and why wasn't the highway superintendent notified of this change?
In the meantime, the town supervisor put in a claim to the insurance company and was paid for monies that are NOT missing!!! Our town supervisor has tried everything he can think of to remove our ELECTED highway superintendent including slander, trying to have his bond revoked, and stating publicly that he does not recognize him as highway superintendent. Additionally, he has made the statement that he will not approve any bill incurred by the highway superintendent on behalf of the town. How then do we then get our roads repaired etc.? Certainly, our highway superintendent can't be expected to pay the estimated $139,000 to repair the three worst roads in Alma (the worst being Alma Hill)!  Now everything is riding through the court system on the backs of Alma taxpayer's hard-earned dollars! I understand we are way over $10,000 in litigation so far and it climbing rapidly! It appears that our town supervisor is using the Alma town board as a platform to satisfy his own interests such as refusing wages to an elected official and cancelling his insurance.... instead of considering what's best for Alma and our citizens. Stay tuned!!!!
